There are many practical factors to take into account when choosing a chicken coop plan that’s right for you. By
determining your specific needs you can save yourself hours of time a lot of money. Here are some questions you can
use to create your checklist.
How many chickens do you plan to have?
If you start out with new chicks, don’t forget they will grow up to full size! Remember the space parameters when
you are buying chickens. Also, think about how many eggs per day you really need.
Most laying hens produce 2-4 eggs per week during their peak laying time. Think about how many eggs you will
consume or share and plan accordingly.
What can you do to protect against predators?
Do you live on the outskirts of a wood, or in a rural area? Do you have dogs roaming around your neighborhood? Do
you have a dog? Even night animals like raccoons will pose a threat to your chickens.
Invest in quality materials and use a good human-hands only latch on the door of the chicken coop. Protect your
chickens from predators by covering roof ventilation openings with nailed-down wire.
Use small plastic mesh fabric for the walls of your run instead of chicken wire, as it tends to be flimsy. The
last thing you want is a chicken massacre!
Also, when I built my chicken coop I wanted to use quality materials that would last, and protect the chickens from
the elements and from predators. This way you don’t have to rebuild and refurbish the chicken coop much.
