Building a poultry house involves following a specific building plan to ensure the chicken’s environment is a
good one. Whenever you are attempting to build a new structure, you want it to stand the time and maintain a
sustainable chicken flock. Whether you are doing this for the fun of keeping chickens for pets, or the desire to
harvest your own eggs, you want your chickens to be healthy and to keep laying!
Here are the important four steps to build a poultry house your plans should cover:
Assess your backyard for the right space
First, finding the right space for the chicken coop will ensure the structure lasts over the years. You need to
choose a section of land that has proper drainage and that sits on a slight elevation so that you will avoid
flooding.
You may need to do a bit of earth-moving to get the elevation right. Be sure your surface is flat before you
begin to build the foundation. This will depend on the type of soil you are building on. A sandy soil will erode
over time and the poultry house can shift. In this case, build a foundation with drainage elements like drains that
carry away excess water, and gravel which will not erode.
Determine the size and style
Second, take the time to choose the correct size and style of poultry house. Your property and personal style
choices will have a large influence on the design you settle on. Although some designs are very simple structures,
you may want to think about whether you may want to expand down the road or add an outdoor chicken run.
Your personal style will determine whether you want a classic design or something quirky and fun. You can bring
in elements like gate posts, bed posts, old doors and fun paint colors to make the poultry house your own.
Whichever style you chose however, include the important basic steps for functionality and the hen's well
being.
